A Place to Belong: ESL at Bradford & IFR

As this spring semester comes to a close, we find ourselves reflecting with full hearts on all that has taken place in our ESL classrooms at IFR and Bradford.

What began as simple weekly gatherings on Mondays and Thursdays became something much more: a space where people from Cuba, Mexico, Iran, Vietnam and Laos came together not only to learn English, but to be known, encouraged, and supported.

Our ESL program has become more than just a space to practice English. It’s become a place of connection. A place where laughter is shared over new words, where encouragement is spoken in many accents, and where friendships are formed across cultures.

This is only possible because of the incredible volunteer teachers from our community who show up week after week with open hearts. They bring patience, kindness, and a genuine desire to serve. Through simple acts, like explaining a phrase, celebrating progress, or just listening, they reflect something deeper: love in action.

In these classrooms, we see what happens when people choose to care. Students are not only learning a language, they are gaining confidence, finding support, and experiencing a sense of belonging in a new place.

And in return, our volunteers are reminded that community is a gift we build together.

This is what it looks like to welcome others into our lives, to walk alongside one another, and to create spaces filled with hope.
