Discover the Gift of Sabbath

Blessings Providence Family,

The book referenced below, The Sabbath Way, was the first book that I read during my Sabbatical. It was life giving and set the tone for my time of rest.  The author, Travis West, attended seminary the same time I did and now is a professor at Western Theological Seminary.  I hope to have Travis spend some time with on the campus of Providence in the next year to help us learn to better ‘delight in the sabbath.’   The invitation below would be a great start to this conversation.

Blessings to your sabbath practices,

- Pastor Toby

“Thus says the Lord: Stand at the crossroads and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way lies; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.” –Jeremiah 6:16

You are invited to join us for a four-week reading journey through The Sabbath Way with author Rev. Dr. Travis West and host Elder Barbara Pimentel, meeting every Thursday from October 23–November 13 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Eastern.

In the midst of our fast-paced, productivity-oriented, go-go-go culture, attempting to fit a Sabbath practice into our life can like a far-off, impossible ideal. The good news is that the Sabbath doesn’t want to “fit” into our lives; it wants to take over our lives—in the best way imaginable. Dr. West believes that the Sabbath as the Bible understood it is not just a practice we remember once a week; it’s a posture we inhabit every day of our life—a posture that leans toward gratitude, wonder, presence, play, rest, and delight. It is a gift from the heart of God. It is an act of protest against the lie that you are what you do and that your life’s meaning is dependent on productivity or achievement. Join this fall journey to help orient you, like a compass, along this ancient path to find the rest your soul craves.

To order your copy of The Sabbath Way, head over to www.travis-west.com for ordering information. Leave plenty of time for the book to arrive before sessions start!

When you receive your registration confirmation, a Zoom link will pop up; be sure to add it to your calendar. A reminder with the Zoom link will be sent out prior to each gathering. Sessions will likely run a bit past 8:30 p.m.; we encourage you to build in extra time to accommodate the Spirit’s leading.
